Nets’ Egor Demin reflects on facing Steph Curry in loss to Warriors

NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets rookie guard Egor Deming is being asked to do a lot for the Nets, and head coach Jordy Fernandez is trying to develop him as quickly as possible. Deming has been improving in Brooklyn as of late, but he has arguably the biggest game of his young career as he faces Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry.

“He might be one of the [guys] I haven’t played with you yet, have I? As of right now, it feels like he might be one of the most influential players for him. Deming said of Curry after Monday’s 120-107 loss to the Warriors. Deming had arguably his toughest game of the season, but he held his own, finishing with 23 points, three rebounds and three assists on 7-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc.

“We really paid attention to him and obviously he’s a very good player. Some of the shots that didn’t even count were impressive,” Deming continued. “For me, it’s an honor to be on the pitch with him, that’s for sure.”

Deming, 19, will be tasked with guarding Curry, a future Hall of Famer who finished Monday’s game with 27 points and five assists on 8-for-15 shooting. After Monday’s loss, Deming is now averaging 9.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 39.2% from the field and 36.5% from three-point range.

Not only did Deming hold his own against one of the best players in NBA history, Curry, but he was coming off the best month of his rookie career. In December, Deming averaged 11.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game, shooting 40.5% from the field and 38.7% from three-point range. Deming also set a Nets rookie record with a career-high seven three-pointers.
