NASCAR’s Clash postponed to Wednesday due to historic snowfall in North Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A bomb twister over North Carolina forced NASCAR to postpone its preseason exhibition until Wednesday night because snow-covered roads have become too dangerous for teams and fans to travel to historic Bowman Gray Stadium.

The clash was originally scheduled for Sunday night but has been postponed twice and the schedule adjusted due to heavy snowfall in the area. NASCAR first condensed the race into a one-day, Sunday-only race and then moved the race to Monday.

NASCAR said Sunday it would move the race to Wednesday night “due to the impact of historic winter weather in the North Carolina region.”

The race is currently scheduled to take place one week before Daytona 500 qualifying at Daytona International Speedway, which hosted The Clash from 1979 to 2022.

The Clash played on a temporary track inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for three seasons before moving to Bowman Gray’s grassroots home last year.

The first year was a success, but the second was interrupted by a bomb cyclone, which meteorologists call a strong, rapidly intensifying weather system. Nearly a foot (30 centimeters) of snow fell in and around Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city and home to most NASCAR teams.

Peter Mullinax, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, said the snowfall ranks among the top five snowfall events ever recorded in Charlotte.
