The House Ethics Committee announced Friday afternoon that Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is under investigation by the Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC).
as pointed out business insider Brian MetzgerIt’s unclear why Mays is under investigation. Given the time in early December, this may have something to do with an incident at Charleston International Airport more than a month ago in which she reportedly berated airport police. An internal investigative report accused Mays of overreacting to miscommunication about travel security issues and creating a “spectacle,” calling police “fucking idiots” and “fucking incompetent.” Mace disputed the allegations in the report, calling the report “bogus.”
A news release posted on the committee’s website noted that Mace, who is running in a crowded Republican primary to be South Carolina’s next governor, was the subject of a Dec. 2 filing by the OCC.
“The Commission notes that the fact of a filing or extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such extensions and the names of the subjects of the matter, do not in themselves indicate that any violation has occurred and do not represent any judgment by the Commission,” the release states, adding that the Commission will “announce its course of action in this matter on or before March 2, 2026.”
According to the OCC’s website, both the House Ethics Committee and the OCC “accept responsibility for alleged ethics violations by members, officers, and employees of the House of Representatives,” describing the collaborative process as follows:
The OCC is a nonpartisan, independent entity created by the House of Representatives in 2008 to conduct preliminary reviews of allegations of misconduct and, when necessary, refer matters to the Ethics Committee, which has exclusive jurisdiction to detect violations and impose penalties. The Ethics Committee can also initiate its own investigation without a referral from the OCC.
So far, Mace has not commented on the investigation on X’s personal account or his congressional account. Her only tweet since news of the investigation broke was to warn voters of the frigid winter weather this weekend.
