Caleb Herring enters the transfer portal

Somewhat surprisingly, Caleb Herring had entered the portal. The junior edge rusher had four sacks last season, rotating with Jordan Ross and Joshua Josephs. With just one season of eligibility remaining, Herring will look for new opportunities.

The former four-star recruit got off to a hot start this year, recording a sack against Georgia and two more against Mississippi State. However, Herring only recorded three tackles in the final four games of the season.

With Joshua Josephs headed to the NFL, Tennessee will turn to Jordan Ross on EDGE. New EDGE coach Andrew Jackson will be tasked with building out a room that suddenly lacks depth. Tennessee has been linked with Penn State EDGE edge rusher Chaz Coleman, a former five-star recruit. Keep an eye out for this name in the coming days.

Tennessee will also bring in a deep defensive line/EDGE group in the 2026 class following a strong showing during the early signing period.

Herring is Tennessee’s No. 1 prospect in the 2023 recruiting cycle. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound pass rusher never quite lived up to the hype, playing behind Josephs and James Pierce all season in Knoxville.

Herring committed to Tennessee back in 2022 with offers from Miami, Georgia and USC.
