Jan. 23 (UPI) — Residents of a small town in Montana can’t explain a local mystery that has persisted for years – three bicycles on a log in the Missouri River.
The three bikes have been stuck on top of a log in Great Falls since at least the fall of 2020, and despite efforts by sites like Reddit to unravel the mystery, the question of who put them there and why remains.
An investigation by KRTV’s Quentin Shores failed to find any answers, but came up with a few theories, including the idea that the bikes could be an urban art installation or some kind of prank.
“I don’t know who was responsible for putting these bikes on the logs,” Rebecca Engum, executive director of the Great Falls Montana Tourism Bureau, told Shores. “I remember seeing them driving by one day and thinking it was a beautiful improvised urban art feature.”
Ngum said installing the bikes was a complex undertaking.
“People still bring their bikes to the logs and secure them in some way, and that’s a unique thing that’s going on,” Ngum said.
Krystal Pfleger, general manager of Mackenzie River Pizza Co., said bicycles are a frequent topic of conversation locally.
“A lot of our guests come in, especially tourists, and they ask, ‘What’s that bike up there?'” Pfleger said. “Honestly, I don’t have a good answer for them, but I think it’s really cool.”
