Earthquakes continue to occur in South Carolina, including one near Lake Murray, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
A magnitude 2.8 earthquake struck about 3 miles west of Ilmo at 6:45 p.m. Friday, about 2 miles underground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This is the ninth earthquake to hit South Carolina in 2026.
Seismic activity follows three earthquakes in less than 12 hours in the Low Countries this week.

Prior to this, three other earthquakes were recorded in the lowland region, making it six in ten days.
The six consecutive earthquakes in the Low Country preceded the last one on Jan. 27, when a magnitude 2.1 earthquake was confirmed near Elgin, South Carolina, according to the Department of Natural Resources. The record comes a week after South Carolina’s first confirmed earthquake of 2026 struck the same area in Kershaw County, measuring a magnitude 2.7.
