Swiss Marco Odermatt clinched his fifth consecutive overall World Cup title, the biggest annual prize in ski racing, with six races left in the season.
Odermatt leads Brazil’s Lucas Pinheiro Brasson by 632 points in the overall standings. The maximum points a skier could earn per win was 100 points, so no one could catch Odermatt for the rest of the season.

Odermatt, 28, is the fifth alpine skier to win the five-event overall title, following Austrians Marcel Hirscher (eight times) and Annemarie Moser-Pröll (six times), American Mikaela Shiffrin (who will win her sixth later this month) and Luxembourg’s Marc Girardelli (five times).
All of Odermatt’s championships have been won by at least 400 points.
This season, he has won nine races and been on the podium 14 times. The man in second place has won three times (Norway’s Atel Leigh McGrath) and seven times on the podium (Norway’s Pinheiro Braassen, McGrath and Henrik Kristoffersen).
At the Milan Cortina Olympics, Odermatt won two silver medals and a bronze medal, four years after winning gold in the giant slalom.

His focus in recent seasons has been filling a rare gap in his resume: winning the most prestigious annual ski race, the Hanankamm Downhill in Kitzbühel, Austria, in January. This year, he finished second in the Hanankam competition for the third time.
