The Utah Mammoths already made a trade on Wednesday, acquiring Mackenzie Vega from the Calgary Flames.

But due in part to the parameters of the deal, the Mammoths may not be able to complete it before Friday’s NHL trade deadline. In fact, they could still make a play for St. Louis Blues star center Robert Thomas.

This is what The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun wrote on the X Thursday morning:

“While the Flames are getting a great deal for Mackenzie Vega, two things can happen at the same time, and it doesn’t diminish Utah’s top assets. The Mammoths aren’t giving up any top-five prospects and still have first-round picks this year and next. That said, Utah is still in a good position to draft another wing in Robert Thomas. Or look at something else.”

More: The Avalanche was traded away, and a guard born on the same day was traded.

The Mammoths are right not to give up too much for Vega, an aging defender who will be useful now but doesn’t have much long-term utility.

Even before that trade, they had been linked to big moves elsewhere, including Thomas.

Thomas scored 21 goals and 60 assists for the Blues last season, but he has declined along with the rest of the team this season. A change of scenery might be nice.

But with Thomas still under contract for five years, St. Louis is firm on his valuation. It sounds like the Buffalo Sabers have been in talks for a while but simply couldn’t meet the Blues’ asking price.

Is Mammoth willing to take such drastic action? We’ll have to wait and see, and only if Thomas’ trade goes through, will the rest of the hockey world truly know how bold the Blues’ request in return is.

Utah is in a position, though, and the best part about Thomas is that he’ll not only help this year, but in future seasons as well.

Stay tuned because it sounds like Mammoth isn’t done yet.
