Longtime Michigan football assistant Jerry Hanlon dies at 96

Longtime Michigan football assistant Jerry Hanlon has died. He is 96 years old.

Hanlon came to Michigan from Miami (Ohio) in 1969 with Bo Schembechler and was hired as head coach. Hanlon spent 23 seasons at Michigan through 1991, coaching multiple positions, including quarterback and defensive line, but was best known for his work as offensive line coach.

He helped develop 18 All-American linemen, as well as All-American quarterback Jim Harbaugh. Hanlon had 36 players drafted by NFL teams.

After retiring from coaching in 1991, Hanlon became associate director of development and external relations for the athletic department.

Originally from North Bend, Ohio, Hanlon began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Tyler High School. After one season, he went to Canton Catholic High School where he served as an assistant football coach for four seasons and the head basketball coach for one year. He coached three seasons at Youngstown Ursuline and then one season at Cleveland St. Edward’s before joining Jon McVay’s staff at the University of Dayton for the 1965 season.

He graduated from the University of Miami in 1956. He played halfback on the 1953, 1954 and 1955 teams that won two Mid-American Conference championships under Ara Parseghian. Hanlon coached with Schembechler at Miami for three seasons (1966-68) before coming to Michigan.
