L.A. County driver caught using phony passenger in carpool lane: CHP

A driver in West Covina was ticketed earlier this month for trying to cheat carpool lane regulations by wearing a jacket, the California Highway Patrol said.

“At first glance, it appeared the driver had a passenger,” the CHP said. “On closer inspection… the ‘passenger’ turned out to be a jacket, carefully wrapped around the front seat and wearing a seat belt, making it look like a human being.”

On March 3, the driver was stopped by CHP officers on Highway 10 for using an HOV lane without a passenger. The minimum fine for a rideshare violation in California is $490.

“Nice try, but jackets do not count toward carpool lane requirements,” the CHP said.
