Kyler Murray is no longer a quarterback on the Arizona Cardinals roster. He was released and signed with the Minnesota Vikings. However, many have raised questions about how his foot injury caused him to miss every game after Week 5.
SI.com’s Albert Breer spelled out that timeline in his latest MMQB column.

We know Murray injured his foot in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans but still finished the game. We know he appears to be on the verge of playing in Week 9 against the Dallas Cowboys. Then things quickly changed and he never competed again. Many people consider this a “soft bench.”
According to Brill’s column, it was a legitimate injury.
What’s going on with Kyler Murray’s foot injury?
“There was swelling after the game. He was tested and will be out for a few weeks, but he won’t need surgery,” Brill said.
It looks like he might be available after the bye against the Dallas Cowboys. His performance in the game was questionable, but Jacoby Brissett started and the Cardinals won one last time.

With so little time after Monday night’s game, head coach Jonathan Gannon said Brissett would start the next game, and that’s when the decision was made to place Murray on IR.
“Murray’s foot injury is still around 60 percent and not getting better. He could continue to play, but due to blood flow issues, Lisfranc could suffer a more serious injury if he did. So, the day after Gannon named Brissett the starter, the decision was made to move Murray to injured reserve and give him a month to recover.”
This isn’t really a bench. He is not in good health.
But then the Cardinals lost four straight games after winning in Dallas. That’s when “the Cardinals and Murray’s camp agreed there was no point in not shutting him down.”
We know the rest – the Cardinals didn’t win a game the rest of the way. To avoid a $17 million player bonus (which would also trigger $19.5 million in guaranteed money in 2027), the Cardinals released Murray, who is still guaranteed $36.8 million in 2026, and signed with the Vikings.

When he was introduced to Minnesota media after signing, he didn’t say whether his foot was healthy now, but he said he’d be happy when he gets on the field.
