“Casper used the word ‘devastating,’ Peter Schmeichel, when asked for an update on his son’s injury. “If you think about my life, my life and my whole career as a professional footballer has been with Casper – he’s always been there for me.

“I try to do the same thing for him, so no matter what situation he faces, I try to be there as a dad. I don’t want it to end in hurt like this.
“A year ago he broke his shoulder in a game for Denmark against Portugal. We used all five substitutes. He held on. It was the quarter-finals of the Nations League. He kept playing and made a good save.

“But, of course, you can’t play with a shoulder injury. He did. He was out for a short period and had rehab. But in that period after a goalkeeper injured his shoulder, you can’t imagine how bad it was.
“Every time you jump to that side, you’re going to land on top. So, having to manage that period afterward and do something you wouldn’t want your son to do – get the shot and endure all the pain.”
As Peter Schmeichel explains, while Kasper was prepared to play injured, things came to a head during Celtic’s Europa League play-off tie against Stuttgart at Celtic Park when he fell awkwardly on his shoulder.

“Then, of course, we ended it like that. Three or four weeks ago he had a very, very bad game against Stuttgart.
“He got another shot, which triggered a reaction that we didn’t want. And then, yesterday there was very, very bad news. It was really terrible. Obviously, I’m in pragmatic mode right now. What can I do to help Casper? How do we organize recovery? Everything. Everything.”
“But, of course, emotionally, it hits you a few days later when you think, ‘Wow, Casper’s career could be over from this’.”
Casper’s current contract with Celtic expires at the end of the season, and it looks unlikely that the club will renew it given his age and the long spell he currently faces on the sidelines.
His World Cup dream is now over, which is a huge motivation for him to keep playing. By the end of his recovery period, he will be in his 40s and must ask himself whether it is worth putting his body through the stress of playing football at this age.

Casper should do everything he can to recover and then follow Joe Hart’s example and build a career in the game as a specialist.
Questions do need to be asked about the whole saga at Celtic, going back to the Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen when Casper was rushed back to the final in apparent discomfort, costing Celtic the trophy. A look back at Aberdeen’s goals.
Remember when Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson claimed Celtic aspired to be “world class in everything we do”? This example could be added to the long list of examples that prove his claims are far from reality.
We certainly wish Kasper all the best with his recovery and career beyond Celtic.
