Kamaru Usman: Six UFC title fights at White House? ‘I might be asleep’

Kamaru Usman thinks the UFC could have multiple title fights at the White House event, which is ridiculous.

US President Donald Trump has joked that the UFC’s planned June 14 event on the South Lawn will feature eight or nine title fights. UFC play-by-play commentator Jon Anik thinks we might see six or seven fights, but Usman says that would be too many for viewers to watch.

He was quite critical of the idea.

“They’re talking about six or seven title fights, first with Henry, and excuse my French, but who the hell wants to see seven back-to-back title fights, five back-to-back title fights,” Usman said on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast with Henry Cejudo. “What if four, five or six games in a row are boring? I think that’s a bad idea, a bad idea, because first of all, we want to see contenders fighting. We want to see people who are willing to risk their lives.

“When you’re the champion, your whole goal is to maintain that, you want to be smart, you want to be tactical, you want to be strategic about retaining your title. Champions don’t be like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to throw caution to the wind like we were in a bar fight,’ and that’s not what champions do, because that’s not what makes you a champion. You have to be smarter than the other guy. This whole concept, ‘Let’s have six title fights in there,’ I thought that was a bad idea and honestly, I probably fell asleep in the third title fight, I probably fell asleep.”

Many fighters have competed at the White House, most notably former two-division champions Conor McGregor and Jon Jones. No games have been scheduled for the event.
