Many retailers went bankrupt and closed stores in 2025. In fact, retailers have vacated 120 million square feet of retail space this year due to store closures and bankruptcies, according to Coresight Research.
Some of the stores that have closed include well-known retailers that consumers have relied on for years. One of these stores is a 77-year-old furniture retailer.
The furniture retailer operates in 17 states. Now, however, the company has declared bankruptcy and announced it will close multiple stores across the United States, leaving customers in the lurch.
One furniture retailer that filed for bankruptcy and is about to close its doors is American Signature Inc. (ASI). ASI is the parent company of two very well-known furniture retailers:
The company has a total of 120 stores in the 17 states where it operates. Value City is present in more states than American Signature Furniture and has stores in:

Indiana
-
kentucky
-

-
michigan
-

-

ASI has a total of 120 physical stores, far fewer than other major furniture retailers such as La-Z-Boy with 2,571 stores and Mattress Firm with 2,373 stores, according to data firm ScrapeHero.

Despite this, Value City Furniture and American Signature Furniture remain household names, with RocketReach reporting that Value City Furniture alone has more than 1,300 employees and receives more than 2 million web visits.
American Signature Furniture Inc. announced it wants to reorganize after bankruptcy rather than shut down completely. The company hopes to sell its assets to tracking horse bidder ASI Buyer LLC, according to a statement.
Still, it closed many stores.
The list of stores slated to close includes the following locations in 14 states, according to court documents, the company’s website listing closed stores, and previous announcements.

Clearance sales have begun at the stores to be closed, with the process expected to be completed by January 2026.
Many customers were upset by the news, including some who had not yet purchased furniture or warranties.
For example, in one Facebook post, a poster commented that they had just purchased an item from a store that was closing and were worried about whether it would be delivered or whether they would get their money back.
More retail:
Another said: “I’m wondering what this means for my warranty, I just got a new couch this summer.”
Unfortunately, these customers will have to wait and see how the bankruptcy and store closings play out to determine what will happen to their merchandise.
As these stores close, future customers will find fewer options for purchasing furniture in person.
