Britain’s Josh Kelly will compete for a world title for the first time this weekend as the promising former Olympian aims to reach his full potential. But a tough test awaits in the form of the undefeated Bahram Murtazaliyev.
Kelly has been a highly regarded boxer domestically for many years and represented Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he lost in the last 16 to eventual champion Daniyar Yeleussinov. While the defeat was no disgrace, it was disappointing for the 22-year-old Kelly and the Sunderland boxer has suffered more as a professional.

Tie with Ray Robinson in 2019 (not That Ray Robinson, of course), Kelly was stopped by David Avanesyan in 2021. However, Kelly, now 31, has since gotten back on track, going on to win the British and international super welterweight titles. In fact, he made it seven consecutive wins this weekend at Newcastle United.
There, Kelly (17-1-1, 9 knockouts) will attempt to dethrone Murtazaliyev, who holds the IBF super welterweight title and is undefeated at 23-0 (17 KOs). The 33-year-old champion hasn’t fought since October 2024, could Kelly benefit from the Russian’s ring rust?
Here’s everything you need to know:
