‘I made a big mistake dropping Sanju Samson’: Harry Brook reveals key reason behind England’s semi-final heartbreak

New Delhi: England captain Harry Brooke admitted that costly defensive errors – including Sanju Samson’s missed catch – played a decisive role in India’s defeat to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-finals on Thursday.

Brooke admitted in his post-match speech that England misread the conditions and failed to execute their plan, especially on the field, which allowed India to register a daunting total.

“We thought the first innings was probably about grip, spin, good slide to the bat and India bowled well. I will put my hands up and admit I made a big mistake, dropping Samson. We didn’t do a good enough job on the field. We executed wrong and couldn’t do that against India,” Brooke said.

The turning point came when Brooke dismissed Samson when the Indian batsmen scored just 15 runs. The chance bowled by Jofra Archer proved costly as Samson then steadied India’s innings with a majestic knock.

Samson’s 89 off 42 balls helped India post a staggering 253/7, a total that ultimately proved to be beyond England’s reach.

“Yeah, catching the ball wins the game, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it didn’t stay in my hands, and yeah, it was just one of those things. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch it and he also had a very, very good inning and won the game so to speak,” Brook said.

The England captain admitted that the missed opportunity had been on his mind throughout the chase.

“Obviously, as the game goes on, it gets in your head. I kept looking at the scoreboard and he kept scoring. I was like, ‘I’ve got to score 80 or 90 points tonight.'” Not ideal, but it’s happening now,” he added.

Despite the defeat, Brooke found positives in England’s fierce chase, praising young batsman Jacob Besser’s fearless century in particular.

Bethell made 105 off just 48 balls, while Will Jacks contributed 35 in the counter-attacking partnership to briefly revive England’s hopes.

“Bessel is absolutely unbelievable and he’s going to make a lot of money. To see him take the ball off the first pitch shows the world what he’s capable of,” Brook said.

England ended up with a score of 246/7, losing miserably despite a good performance from Bethell and a late blitz from Archer. However, Brook insists his side can still be proud of their campaign.

“We had a great game; we should be very proud of our performance. We hung in there the whole game; unfortunately we were on the wrong side,” he said.
