How to Check PUC Validity Of Your Vehicle Online Using Different Methods: A Step-by-Step Guide

Maintaining a vehicle’s PUC validity has become more important than ever, especially in Delhi-NCR where enforcement is stricter during pollution peaks. GRAP-IV restrictions in December have brought tighter inspections in the capital, with reports that vehicles without a valid PUC will not be able to refuel at petrol stations. There are also signs that the “no PUC, no fuel” approach may continue after GRAP-IV.

So, as authorities rely more on digital records to verify compliance, knowing how to check your PUC status online can help you avoid fines or inconvenience during your daily commute.

What is a PUC?

PUC is the abbreviation of Pollution Under Control, which is a mandatory emission certificate issued after the vehicle has passed the emission test at an authorized center. It confirms that the vehicle’s exhaust emissions are within authorized limits.

For most private vehicles, a PUC certificate is usually valid for one year, but the validity period may vary depending on the vehicle’s age and fuel type. The certificate includes details such as vehicle registration number, emissions readings, date of issue and expiry date.

Why a valid PUC is important

By law, a valid PUC is required to drive on Indian roads. Driving a vehicle with an expired or missing certificate may result in fines under the Motor Vehicles Act and may also invalidate insurance claims in some cases. In pollution-sensitive areas such as the National Capital Region of Delhi, enforcement will be stricter during smog weather, with authorities conducting spot checks and in some cases restricting the refueling of non-compliant vehicles.

In addition to the legal ramifications, the latest PUC also ensures that your vehicle does not unduly contribute to air pollution, thereby complying with broader environmental and public health goals.
