president Donald Trump Colombian president warns Gustavo Petro He better “smart up” because “he’s next” as the government steps up efforts to stop alleged drug smuggling in the Caribbean.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump was asked about Petro’s criticism of U.S. attacks on suspected drug-trafficking ships in the Caribbean. Petro called these efforts “barbaric.”
Trump defended the attack, claiming the ships were heading to the United States and posed a direct threat. He accused the Venezuelan president of Nicolás MaduroHis electoral victory was disputed because he was the mastermind behind a drug smuggling operation.
The president warned Petro that he was the next target of the government’s attention. Trump has previously attacked Petro, calling him a “thug.”
He said on Wednesday:
He was quite hostile to the United States, and I didn’t think much of it. If he’s not wise, he could cause himself some big problems. Did he say Colombia produces a lot of drugs? As you know, they have cocaine factories that produce cocaine and sell it directly to the United States. So he better wise up or he’ll be next. He will be next. I hope he’s listening. He will be next. Because we don’t like people who kill people and sell drugs. They kill people. [people] As you know, Colombia is a major producer of drugs to the United States, specifically cocaine.
In October, Trump similarly blasted oil companies and threatened “tough action” against Colombia.
“He seriously hurt his country, Colombia, and they performed very badly,” the president said at the time. “They make cocaine – they have cocaine factories. They grow all kinds of junk – these drugs, low-quality drugs, come into the United States, often through Mexico. He better pay attention to this or we’re going to take very serious action against him and his country.”
