Soon after India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final, Dhoni, after almost two years, returned to Instagram to congratulate the team and support staff. The former India captain, who played in the Ahmedabad final, couldn’t help but make a playful comment about Gambhir’s famously strong character.
“History was made in Ahmedabad, huge congratulations to the team and support staff and all the fans of the Indian cricket team across the world. It was a pleasure to see you all playing,” Dhoni wrote.
But his cheeky comments about Gambhir went viral.
“Coach Sahab’s smile looks great on you, intensity and smile is a killer combination, well done. Enjoy guys… Bumrah ke baare mein kuch na likhoon toh hi achha hai. Champion bowler,” Dhoni added, praising India’s pace spearhead while citing Gambhir’s typically no-nonsense demeanor.
Gambhir, who was the head coach during India’s title-winning run, responded enthusiastically to Dhoni’s message.
“What a reason to smile, great to see you,” Gambhir wrote in a reply, acknowledging the former captain’s presence at the stadium.
The exchange caught the attention of fans given the pair’s long history in Indian cricket. Gambhir was an important member of Dhoni’s World Cup-winning team and played game-deciding shots in both the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup finals.

Sunday’s final provided another memorable chapter in white-ball sports for India. Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India posted a formidable 255/5 on the back of explosive contributions from Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma.
Bowler Jasprit Bumrah then played a brilliant performance of 4 for 15 to seal the victory.
