Disposable vape pens are no longer sold in the UK due to a nationwide ban introduced in June.
In an effort to reduce the growing waste and pollution caused by disposable e-cigarettes, the UK has banned businesses from selling or stocking disposable e-cigarette products, regardless of whether they contain nicotine. The ban applies to sales in stores and online.
Rechargeable or reusable vape pens can still be legally sold or stocked in retail stores.
Councilor Iskandar Jefferies, chairman of the Joint Public Protection Committee, explained the ban on disposable e-cigarettes. “They waste valuable resources and are often discarded inappropriately, releasing harmful substances into the environment and creating fire hazards in landfills and waste removal vehicles,” Jeffries told Reading Chronicle.
According to a report by Material Focus, around 8.2 million disposable e-cigarettes are thrown away in the UK every week, which equates to approximately 13 e-cigarettes every second. While 20% of consumers will recycle disposable e-cigarettes in stores by 2024, hundreds of millions of e-cigarettes are expected to end up in landfills or scattered throughout the environment.
Disposable e-cigarettes pose a significant threat to the environment as they are not biodegradable and often contain harmful materials such as lithium. These devices contribute to plastic pollution, release toxic chemicals into the environment, and contribute to the growing e-waste problem.

Statista reports that e-cigarette sales in the UK are expected to reach $4.2 billion by 2025. With so much money being invested in vape pens, Jefferies acknowledged that some local businesses will see a significant impact on their annual revenue. However, the primary concern remains the health of the environment.
“We urge local businesses to plan accordingly and ensure they make the necessary arrangements to deal with unsold product before the deadline,” Jeffries said before the ban came into effect.
