Good Sports: Retired Merced County judge still serving on the tennis court at 86

Robert Quayle is still serving, just in a different court.

“I was a prosecutor for 12 years and a judge for 30 years,” Quayle said.

Robert ended his legal career in Merced County Superior Court, and at age 67, he returned to the tennis court.

“Two years ago I was No. 1 in the world in singles,” Quayle said. “This year, I’m No. 1 in the world in doubles.”

Today, 86-year-old Robert has won 17 Ballon d’Or, the national championship award for first place.

He has also been named to nine Masters World Cup teams, most recently captaining the United States in the 85-and-over category and winning a bronze medal.

“This year, the top four are going to Crete, Greece, so I want to stay with the team for at least one more year,” Quayle said.

Ralph was one of Robert’s batting partners and the two had been keeping each other in shape for nearly 25 years.

“He (Robert) always booked a round of golf for the same day, so he was playing two or three sports in one day,” said Ralph. “That’s what strikes me. People can’t do that in their 50s, 60s, 40s or even 30s, let alone at his age.”

Aside from what he calls a “bad habit” of drinking Diet Coke, Quayle’s health remains in tip-top shape and shows no signs of slowing down.

Robert is trying to prove that in one game.
