Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch’s Sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Revealed; Will Launch in 2025

Sucker Punch’s action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima is finally getting a sequel. During Sony’s State of Play show on Tuesday, the developer took the wraps off Ghost of the Rampant, introducing a new protagonist and a brand new setting. The sequel will feature the female hero Atsu as she journeys through the area surrounding Mount Yotei in northern Japan in the 1600s. Soul of the Rampant will be released exclusively on PS5 in 2025.

New settings for Soul of the Goat Hoof

In the final announcement at the State of Play conference, Sucker Punch revealed the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, releasing a trailer that mixed gameplay and in-game animations. The story of “Ghost of Tsushima” takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of “Ghost of Tsushima”. The game will take players to a new region of Japan – Mount Yotei, a volcanic peak in Mount Ezo in the northern region of Japan that is now Hokkaido.

While the developers haven’t revealed details about the new setting, players can look forward to a vast open-world area to explore with a mountain in the center of the map. “In 1603, the region fell outside Japanese rule and was filled with vast grasslands, snowy tundra, and unexpected dangers. It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans that lived on Tsushima, the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell,” Sucker Punch detailed the sequel in a PlayStation blog post.

Protagonist of Soul of the Goat Hoof

Ghost of Yotei will also feature a new protagonist, replacing the samurai Jin Sakai from the first game. In the trailer, new hero Atsu can be seen wielding a katana and shamisen, and later using a chain weapon and a rifle. Suck Punch says the game will feature new weapons, mechanics, and gameplay improvements compared to Ghost of Tsushima.

In the trailer, Aziz appears to have a wolf companion. The game may feature deeper interactions with wildlife. She wears a ghost mask and a straw hat. Explaining their decision to abandon the story, characters, and setting of the first game, Sucker Punch said: “To create something fresh yet familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and Tsushima and instead turned our attention to the idea of Ghost. At Sucker Punch, we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it means to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask and unveil a new legend.”

Soul of the Yotsuba graphic improvements

The trailer also shows off considerable graphical enhancements, with Soul of the Sucker Punch being the first Sucker Punch game built from the ground up for PS5. The developer promises the sequel’s world will “feel even more real.”

“We’ve got huge sight lines that let you see into distant environments, new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, more believable wind movement across grass and vegetation, and we’ll have more improvements to share in the future,” the studio said.
