GB’s Weston wins second straight skeleton World Cup gold

Great Britain’s Matt Weston continued a winning start to the Olympic season by claiming another World Cup gold medal in skeleton racing.

The two-time world champion took two wins from two races in Lillehammer on Friday, following last month’s victory in Cortina.

Weston, who missed the pre-season skate with a thigh injury, finished 0.05 seconds ahead of 2022 Olympic silver medalist Axel Jungk of Germany, with South Korea’s Chung Seung-ki in third.

The 28-year-old Englishman has won five of his last six World Cup and World Championship matches since the World Cup in Winterberg in January.

“It’s another really good win this season and I didn’t expect to challenge for gold,” said Weston, who has won the last two World Cup titles.

“It’s been a really tough summer with injuries and I’m not fully recovered yet, so winning the first two games is a huge boost to what we all know is going to be a huge season.

“It’s a big week ahead with our doubleheader in Sigurda but I feel like I’m heading into Christmas in a really good place.”

Teammate Marcus Wyatt finished seventh in Norway, while Jacob Salisbury finished 14th.

Next Thursday and Friday, the track will host a biweekly race in Sigulda, Latvia.

There are still three rounds of competition ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will take place in Milan and Cortina from February 6 to 22.
