Formula E Miami: Mitch Evans charges to victory in wet

Mitch Evans started his Formula E season with a stunning charge to win the wet race at the Miami Electric Grand Prix.

The Jaguar driver failed to score a point in the first two rounds but used a smart fuel-saving strategy to start from ninth on the grid and then used his attack mode to beat his rivals and take the lead.

Evans’ overtake for the lead was arguably his best performance, with a turnaround effort on Nico Mueller at Turn 13 putting him in the lead at the start of lap 28. The New Zealander then measured his battery life and pace for the rest of the race, winning by 3.151 seconds.

Müller battled with Felipe Drugovich for the lead early on and eventually had to settle for second, while Porsche teammate Pascal Wehrlein secured a double podium finish for the German manufacturer.

Wehrlein’s podium, coupled with Nick Cassidy’s scoreless performance, saw the German reduce Citroën’s lead in the drivers’ championship to two points, heading into a doubleheader with Saudi Arabia in two weeks’ time.

Joel Eriksson posted a career-best fourth place finish for Envision Racing, helped in part by the clash between Drugovich and Antonio Felix da Costa. On lap 26, Andretti’s Drugovich misjudged the brakes entering Turn 13 and rear-ended the Portuguese driver, causing the Brazilian driver’s front wing to break, while the Jaguar driver was able to continue with minor damage.
