Video captures moment $900,000 yacht sinks minutes after launch: ‘Shocking’

A newly built yacht’s first launch turned into an unfortunate event when she capsized and sank within minutes. It was a somber moment for the owners, but for many the sight was a reminder of the excesses of the super-rich.

According to the Economic Times, the 24-meter-long luxury yacht “Dolce Vento”, which had just completed construction and was launched into the water for the first time, suddenly rolled over and sank about 200 meters off the coast of Erreli, Turkey.

Greek City Times (@greekcitytimes) shared the video on X and said: “Shocking: luxury yacht Dolce Vento sank just 15 minutes after launching.”

No one was harmed in the incident – the owner, captain and two crew members were able to jump into the sea and swim safely to land.

However, it raised concerns about design flaws and construction issues. It also sparked discussion about the environmental impact of luxury yachts and other extravagances. A study by Oxfam International shows that the world’s 50 richest people create more pollution than the 155 million poorest people.

Superyachts, in particular, have even been found to produce more than three times the pollution of private jets. As yachts become more common among wealthy boat owners, concerns are growing that their fuel use could exacerbate droughts, storms and heat waves.

Nature has issued warnings, including last year’s waterspout in Palermo that destroyed a billionaire’s yacht, suggesting that warming oceans are triggering more dangerous weather events.

Not only that, but yachts and other recreational vessels can damage coral reefs as they sail along shallow waters along the coast. Additionally, they often introduce invasive aquatic species (one of the biggest drivers of biodiversity loss) around the world, according to the International Maritime Organization.

Given these concerns, many expressed mixed emotions – shock at the incident but renewed concern about the environmental impact of large luxury ships.

While some readers dismissed the moment, the event also sparked a broader discussion about climate issues and how personal choices impact the environment.

Another Reddit user added: “Yeah if it’s worth $1 million that’s TEMU’s version of a yacht where big companies will spend $1 million on boats to take you yachting.”
