Patrick Mahomes, quarterback, Chiefs

Mahomes had a bounce-back year in 2025, becoming the fourth-highest fantasy quarterback in points per game. This result comes after a couple of down seasons, with the Chiefs’ specialty passers falling to the low end of the QB1 range in 2024 and QB12 in 2023.

A big reason for his improvement was his increased willingness to run the ball, which helped him reach career highs with 422 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

Unfortunately, a torn ACL ended his season prematurely after Week 15, and questions are now being raised about his availability for the start of the 2026 season. Even if Mahomes is able to suit up for the opener, we’ve seen quarterbacks post-torn ACLs be more hesitant to use their legs, leading to a drop in rushing numbers. Maybe that’s why the team traded Justin Fields as his immediate backup and potential short-term replacement in the first month.

Before we get too pessimistic about Mahomes’ prospects, let’s make one thing clear – he still has a lot of good years ahead of him. However, his fantasy value could decline as the season approaches as people factor in his recovery timeline.

We must also consider how his environment will change in the coming years. Andy Reid, who turns 68 this week, won’t be coaching forever. Travis Kelce nearly retired this offseason, so he may be entering his final season. We’re also uncertain about Rashee Rice’s growing off-field issues.

It may seem sacrilegious to suggest trading Mahomes, but his injury raises concerns about his 2026 projection, and the ecosystem around him will look very different in a year or two.

Christian McCaffrey, running back, 49ers

Overall, moving on from the dynasty’s old guard before their production hits bottom is a smart approach.

McCaffrey was outstanding last season, silencing those who questioned his durability and finishing as a fantasy RB1 player with 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns.

But how much longer can we expect him to maintain this level of production?

The 49ers’ offensive engine will turn 30 in June, a scary age for any running back, especially one who just finished with 413 touches.

Entering his 10th NFL season, McCaffrey is overdue for a drop in production, according to Ryan Heath’s study of age curves.

All things considered, it’s nearly impossible for CMC to match last year’s numbers even if he stays healthy. With potential decline looming and him becoming an extremely dangerous first-round pick to re-draft, it’s time for a dynasty to get off the bench before you find yourself in trouble.

Garrett Wilson, wide receiver, Jets

It seems strange to call Wilson a disappointment since he was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, as he has managed to overcome some of the worst quarterback performances in the league.

advertise

Despite the Jets being in disarray year after year, Wilson still started his career with three consecutive 1,000-yard games and did it again last season before knee issues caused him to end up on injured reserve.

However, as is the case with teammate Breece Hall, you can’t help but feel that if the two young stars had a stronger offense, they would become perennial top-12 players at their positions.

Geno Smith is a better passer than what we saw with the Raiders last year, who had limited weapons, a porous offensive line, and a dysfunctional scheme. The Jets certainly have more talent, but they also have a lot of pieces that need to come together under new offensive coordinator Frank Reich.

While I still believe in Wilson’s talent and don’t want to give up on the immense potential of a player who is only 26 years old come this season, this situation seems to be even more true for him.

This comes down to a fantasy WR2 whose lack of elite ceiling in the current setup causes him to be ranked 10 spots lower in my rankings than he would be if he were paired with a quarterback with a superior offensive ability.

Other WRs may be considered for sale

  • Brian Thomas Jr., Jaguars

  • Courtland Sutton, Broncos

  • Michael Pittman Jr., Steelers

Sam LaPorta, TE, Lions

Laporta’s 2025 season was hampered by a mid-season back injury and he was placed on injured reserve. In his absence, receivers like Jameson Williams and Isaac Tesla have taken on larger roles in the offense — something that will be difficult to put back into the box in the future.

advertise

That’s what worries me about Laporta’s fantasy prospects. There’s no denying that he’s a strong tight end who, at 25 years old, has a lot of career left in him to contribute to your lineup. However, I wonder what his ceiling will be in an offense that features Jameer Gibbs and Amonra St. Brown, as well as the aforementioned up-and-comer Williams and emerging playmaker Tesla.

With this level of target competition, I think Laporta is more likely to be a low-to-mid-range fantasy TE1 than the elite option he emerged from during his rookie season.

It’s also worth noting that Laporta being the top scorer at his position in 2023 is a bit of a fraud. This is the only time since 2016 that the No. 1 fantasy tight end has averaged less than 12 points per game, with Laporta averaging 11.6 points per game.

advertise

He hasn’t even come close to those numbers the past two years, averaging 9.0 in 2024 and 10.5 in his first 10 games before injury in 2025.

So if you’re happy with having a mid-level TE1 in your fantasy lineup, feel free to stick with LaPorta. But if you’re looking for a difference-maker at this position, you should package him with another asset and try to acquire someone higher than I rank.
