Ex-England defender Trippier to leave Newcastle

Kieran Trippier is set to leave Newcastle United when his contract expires this summer.

The right-back joined the club from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, marking the club’s first signing since its takeover by a Saudi-led consortium.

He played a vital role in Newcastle’s resurgence, helping Eddie Howe’s side end a seven-year wait to win the League Cup last season and was instrumental in the club’s qualification for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025.

In a joint statement, the 35-year-old announced that he will leave the club where he “feels most comfortable” at the end of the season.

“It’s exciting and I’m really going to miss it,” he said.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to my supporters for all the support you have given me through my personal good times and bad times. You have always had my back and have always been by my side.

“It’s going to be exciting for my team-mates. It’s been an amazing journey with you. I’m going to miss you all, but winning a trophy with you was really, really special – the best of my career.”

Trippier also paid tribute to Howe, who “trusted” him to join Newcastle after the pair previously worked together at Burnley.

Trippier was Howe’s first signing at the club and although the right-back is on his way out, the manager knows he will “give absolutely everything to finish his time here”.

“Kieran has performed brilliantly for us on and off the pitch,” Howe added. “From the moment he walked through the door he helped drive standards that changed the club’s trajectory.

“He performs at the highest level on the pitch. He forms strong partnerships with the players around him. His outstanding technical ability helps the team improve and his strong crossing ability helps create many goals and opportunities for his teammates.”

“His leadership skills are invaluable. His experience has proven to be calming during difficult times and his drive and will to win inspire players to keep going.”
