Everything Tom Izzo said after Michigan State dominated UCLA

The Michigan State basketball team heads into action at UCLA on Tuesday night looking to bounce back from an embarrassing loss to Wisconsin last Friday. The Spartans answered the bell, beating the Bruins 82-59.

After the win, head coach Tom Izzo said in an interview with the media:

  • “My sport is harder than yours,” he said, pointing to Steve Mariucci.

  • “I guess Mick Cronin escalated it to a blatant two-pointer, huh? It’s the first time I’ve seen a coach do that. He’ll figure it out.”

  • “Denham Wojcik had a little injury to his shoulder and that’s why he didn’t play in the second half.”

  • “I think Jeremy Fiers Jr. probably had one of his best games. He played with a lot of control and didn’t take bad shots. I’m still waiting for him to take over when the team switches. I’m still asking him to do that.”

  • “Hey, we played better, but this is not the UCLA team we saw on film.”

  • “I tell my team it’s about the choices you want to make, it’s about an attitude. These swings (in conference play) are huge.”

  • “I’m not ready to give Jordan Scott the (point guard) position. But I like it and he’s very good. He doesn’t qualify. Jordan Scott doesn’t qualify.”

  • “Jordan Scott’s sense of urgency and mission far exceeds his years.”

  • “The guy we think can take two more steps is Keon Carr. He can step, he can chop, he’s athletic. Shoots more and he’s worked really hard on that this year.”

  • “We did some really good things, we did some stupid things, and we need to clean up the stupid things and do more really good things.”

  • “I brought in five guys, Kuhl, Denham. I said Kuhl and Cam Ward, we need them to take three steps forward. We’re getting Cam a little bit better every day, and he gives us dimension that our other big men don’t have, and his athleticism.”

  • “At the end of the day, I think our fans and the student part did a great job. When a guy comes back, they can be real assholes. I don’t think he (Booker) deserves that. Give him credit, give our fans credit.”
