EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Body camera footage from a traffic stop led to the arrest of a man and a woman on multiple charges, including manufacturing a controlled substance in East El Paso.

Just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on a gray Dodge Challenger for a vehicle registration violation at the Las Palmas Marketplace.

Two people were inside the vehicle during the traffic stop. The driver was identified as 34-year-old Gabriel Guzman and the passenger was identified as 29-year-old Ashley Garcia.

In the body camera footage, you can hear the officer asking Guzman for identification after saying his registration had expired, but Guzman claimed he didn’t have one.

During the roadside interview, Guzman fled on foot. Deputies arrested Guzman, and while detaining him, he swallowed a bag containing an “unknown white powdery substance,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

In the video, the officer chasing Guzman pulls out a Taser and repeatedly tells Guzman to “get on the ground” and “roll over.”

The Sheriff’s Office said Guzman was taken into custody without further incident. A search of the vehicle revealed multiple bags containing “suspicious” drugs.

Guzman was charged with three counts of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance PG 1, two counts of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance PG 3, one count of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance PG 2, evading arrest and tampering with evidence.

Garcia was also arrested and charged with three counts of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance PG 1, two counts of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance PG 3 and one count of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance PG 2.

Both Guzman and Garcia are being held at the El Paso County Detention Facility without bail.

“Attempting to escape and destroying evidence only heightened the severity of the situation,” El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. “Our deputies acted quickly and professionally to take these two individuals into custody and remove dangerous narcotics from our community.”
