Patrick Mahomes’ season is over. His NFL team’s season is coming to an end. Now his college team’s season is over. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback will obviously have to pay the price for the latter.

A day after Mahomes’ alma mater, Texas Tech, was eliminated by Oregon in the Orange Bowl, Chiefs rookie Jeffrey Barca posted the results of a jersey bet between the only Oregon and Texas Tech alumnus on Kansas City’s roster: Mahomes wore Barca’s Oregon jersey on the training table.

The Red Raiders didn’t give Mahomes much hope in Thursday’s College Football Playoff semifinals. They had no momentum on offense and committed four turnovers before losing 23-0, ending a season that saw them break into the Big 12 and get a reality check.

Barca is very familiar with the Ducks’ defense, which put Texas Tech in trouble in that game. He earned All-Pac-12 second-team honors in 2023 and was part of the program’s 2024 Big Ten Championship team, which also disappointed in the CFP.

The Chiefs selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he has appeared in all 16 games with the team this season, making zero starts. He mainly appears in special forces.

Mahomes’ season is over since he tore his ACL last month, and his availability in 2026 will depend on how his rehab progresses.
