The Miami Dolphins made a surprising move in free agency, signing quarterback Malik Willis, but the decision has raised serious questions around the NFL. There are benefits to signing Willis, but there are several reasons it could be considered a big risk, especially for a team like the Miami Dolphins, who just fired Tua Tagovailoa and are trying to rebuild a new culture under a new head coach.

Willis has concerns about passing accuracy

One of the biggest issues in Willis’ early NFL career with the Titans was his inconsistent accuracy as a passer. While he possesses elite arm strength, completing regular passes and maintaining consistency in the NFL passing system has been a challenge. In today’s NFL, time-based offenses dominate and quarterbacks must throw accurate passes quickly and consistently. If these issues persist, it will limit the amount of trust the coaching staff has in him.
Problems he faced while with the Titans:
During his time with the Tennessee Titans, he struggled with the following issues at times:

-
Read defense coverage
-
Go through multiple developments
-
Make quick decisions under pressure
These characteristics are critical for quarterbacks, especially when they are called upon to get into meaningful game situations. Willis has flashed tremendous athleticism, but he has yet to prove he can sustain success at the NFL level. Teams that sign players primarily based on potential are always taking a risk. Development doesn’t always happen the way the organization wants it to.
The Dolphins don’t have the talent Green Bay has:

In Green Bay, when Willis did replace Jordan Love, expectations weren’t high. His job is to run an offense that has more talent than the one he was responsible for in Miami.

Plus, he’s now being paid as the starting quarterback, and that alone creates more pressure and less room for error. Adding Willis as a quarterback to a team that is completely rebuilding seems like a disaster waiting to happen.
