Detroit Lions to play 2026 home game in Munich, Germany

February 24 (UPI) — The Detroit Lions will be the home team for the NFL’s 2026 game in Munich, Germany, the NFL said Tuesday.

Additional details, including the Lions’ opponents and game times and dates at Allianz Field, will be announced this spring when the NFL releases its 2026 schedule. The Lions and 10 other teams have marketing rights in Germany.

“Playing in my mother’s native Germany has been a dream of mine since I came into the league,” Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown said in a release.

“I can’t wait to play in front of these incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through visiting and attending domestic soccer camps. Their support for me and the instant connection this country has with the Lions brand is inspiring, and I look forward to our team being able to showcase Detroit soccer on an international scale.”

The Munich game will be one of a record nine international NFL games in 2026. The matches will be played in eight stadiums in seven countries on four continents.

“We are excited to compete internationally, especially in Munich for the 2026 season,” Lions President and CEO Rod Wood said.

“As an organization we have invested heavily in the German market and are excited to play in front of passionate German fans.”

The NFL plans to host another game in Munich in 2028 and two games in Berlin in 2027 and 2029.

Other teams including the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars have announced international participation in 2026.

The 49ers will play in Melbourne, Australia, and Mexico City, becoming the first NFL team to play two international games in the same season that are not held in consecutive weeks.
