Dayton falls to VCU in the Atlantic 10 championship game

The University of Dayton men’s basketball team fell in the Atlantic 10 tournament finals on Sunday.

The Dayton Flyers trailed from start to finish in a 70-62 loss to the VCU Rams at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Senior guard Javon Bennett scored 14 points for Dayton. Sophomore center Amer Letang had 12 points and three assists. Jordan DeKak scored nine points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Flyers fell to 23-11 overall.

UD trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half and narrowed the deficit to single digits. But the gap never closed.

Dayton shot 43% from the field (23 points on 53 field goals). They shot just 9 of 17 from the free throw line.

Bennett and Derkak were both named to the Atlantic 10 All-American team.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has earned an automatic bid from the Atlantic 10 to host the 2026 NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
