Chelsea fined £10m over historic transfer payments

Chelsea were fined £10m and had their transfer ban suspended after admitting to paying £47m in undisclosed payments related to player transfers between 2011 and 2018. BBC Sport Reported.

The penalty issued by the Premier League is the largest in the Premier League’s history, surpassing the £5.5 million penalty imposed on West Ham United in 2007 over the controversial registration of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

The investigation found “Undisclosed payments were made to players, unregistered agents and other third parties by third parties associated with the club“For the benefit of Chelsea. The payments relate to several high-profile transfers during Roman Abramovich’s ownership, including deals involving Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto’o, Willian, David Luiz and Nemanja Matic. There is no suggestion that any player was involved in wrongdoing.

While the Premier League considered imposing sporting sanctions, including point deductions or immediate transfer bans, Chelsea avoided those penalties after voluntarily self-reporting breaches following the acquisition of the club by a consortium led by Todd Boehly in 2022. Officials confirmed that the club’s “£10m fine has been reduced from a potential £20m fine”Proactive self-reporting and collaboration“.

Chelsea also received separate penalties related to their academy operations: a nine-month ban on registering new academy players and a £750,000 fine for youth recruitment-related breaches between 2019 and 2022.

The club said in a statement that it had been investigated “extremely seriously“and provided”Cooperate fully with all relevant regulatory authorities“.
