Milner ranks ahead of former Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry.

Milner joined Leeds at the age of 16 and became the youngest goalscorer in the Premier League at the time. He also played for Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool.

He won three Premier League titles during his time at Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as two FA Cups and the Champions League.

“He is a role model on and off the pitch,” said Brighton coach Fabian Huerzeller, who is eight years Milner’s junior.

“It’s not surprising that he’s in a position now because he’s very disciplined.

“He puts in a huge effort every day, but he’s never satisfied. He keeps going and this is a great opportunity for him.”

“It’s a great day for him and he shows us again why he is the record holder in the Premier League.”
