Big Ten ties record with nine teams in AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll; UConn, Texas still 1-2

The Big Ten women’s basketball team tied the AP record for the top 25 women’s basketball rankings with nine teams, with Nebraska ranked No. 24 on Monday.

The conference, which set its all-time record on Dec. 2, has three teams in the top 10 this week.

UConn remains ranked No. 1, receiving 23 first-place votes from the national media panel. Texas received another nine votes to remain in second place.

There are no changes to the top ten this week. South Carolina and UCLA ranked third and fourth, followed by LSU and Michigan. Maryland is ranked No. 7 after defeating Minnesota in double overtime on Sunday.

TCU, Oklahoma State and Iowa State round out the top 10. The Cyclones will face No. 11 Iowa State in the state on Wednesday.

Other Big Ten teams participating in the survey include No. 16 USC, No. 20 Washington State, No. 21 Ohio State and No. 25 Michigan State. The Cornhuskers are off to a 9-0 start and ranked No. 1 for the second straight season.

Tennessee Milestone Rankings

The No. 18 Lady Vols appear in the poll for the 800th time in the ranking’s 50-year history. Tennessee spent 565 consecutive weeks in the top 25, a record later surpassed by UConn.

Meeting first

The Big Ten holds the top spot with nine teams, while the Southeastern Conference follows with eight teams. The Big 12 has four and the Atlantic Coast Conference has three. The Big East has one.

Struggling ACC

The ACC had a tough week, going 3-13 against the SEC in conference challenge play. The ACC’s streak of having at least one top-10 team in every poll ended earlier this season after 453 consecutive weeks.

Game of the week

On Saturday, UConn was ranked No. 1 and Southern California was No. 16. The Huskies will travel across the country for one of the few ranking games on their schedule. The two teams have met multiple times over the past few seasons, including in the 2024 and 2025 NCAA Tournament regional finals. UConn won both games, while the Trojans picked up a regular-season win at UConn.

No. 2 Texas faces No. 13 Baylor on Sunday. The two former Big 12 rivals will be revealed at the Sprouts Farmers Market espnW Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. The game will be played at one of the two regional tournament sites in the NCAA tournament.
