U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said Sunday that people need to give President Trump more empathy after he posted that he was “glad” that former FBI Director Robert Mueller died.
“I think it’s impossible for any of us to understand what President Trump and his family have been through, given what he’s been through,” Bessant said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Mueller led the 2016 election interference investigation into Trump, which resulted in a 448-page report that found he did not conspire or coordinate with the Russian government to influence the U.S. election.
He also did not recommend prosecuting Trump. However, the president remains scornful of the 2022 raid on his Mar-a-Lago property that was part of former legal counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s mishandling of classified documents.
“I was in the lounge in Davos with the president, and a video was being played of what may have been an illegal raid on his home in Mar-a-Lago. They were searching his wife’s closet,” Bessant told host Kristen Welker on Sunday.
The Treasury secretary added: “I looked at him and I don’t think any of us can understand what the president and his family have been through.”
Trump is currently seeking an unprecedented $230 million settlement from the Justice Department over multiple federal investigations into his conduct.
“You know, I filed a lawsuit and I’m winning the lawsuit. There’s just one problem. I’m the one who has to fix it,” the president said of the legal battle in December.
“In other words, I’m suing when I’m supposed to be the one solving the problem,” he added.
Legal experts have criticized the proposed settlement, saying the multimillion-dollar request is unusual and could be considered unethical.
