Bears and Indiana governor say progress is being made on a new stadium

The Chicago Bears continue to make noise about moving to Indiana.

Indiana Senate Bill 27, which would provide the Bears with a state-owned stadium, has strong support from the governor and the state Legislature, and the Bears released a statement today calling it a big step toward moving out of Illinois.

“Passage of SB 27 will mark the most meaningful step forward in our stadium planning efforts to date,” a Bears statement said. “We are committed to completing the remaining site-specific due diligence necessary to support our vision of building a world-class stadium near the Wolf Lake area of Hammond, Indiana. We are grateful for the leadership shown by Governor Braun, Speaker Houston, Senator Mishler and members of the Indiana General Assembly in establishing this critical framework and path forward to provide a first-class venue for the entire Chicagoland region and a destination for Bears fans and visitors from around the world. We value our partnership and look forward to continuing to build our working relationship together.”

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun wrote on social media Thursday morning that the state would continue its efforts to attract the Bears.

“Indiana is open for business and our pro-growth environment continues to attract major opportunities, such as this partnership with the Chicago Bears,” Braun wrote. “We have identified a promising site near Wolf Lake in Hammond and established a broad framework for negotiating a final agreement. If approved, Senate 27 The proposed amendments to Bill 1 will provide the basic framework for completing this agreement, assuming the site due diligence proceeds smoothly. Indiana moves at the speed of business, and we have proven that through quick coordination between state agencies, local governments and the Legislature, we have established a foundation for a tremendous win for all Hoosiers. The strong relationship we have built with the Bears will be the foundation for a public-private partnership that results in a world-class stadium and a win for taxpayers.”
