Backstage Report On Rusev’s WWE Return & Unfulfilled Creative Plans

Rusev has not appeared on WWE’s weekly shows since losing to Jey Uso in the quarterfinals of the Last Time Is Now Championship last November, and a new report has outlined details surrounding the “Bulgarian Savage”‘s absence from the ring.

During a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that Rusev is planning to return in the near future, but he also said that WWE has passed on his role, and shared that the Netflix series WWE Unreal seemed to indicate that the 40-year-old was initially positioned in the main event scene.

“He was a huge disappointment, I mean, if you see ‘W.E.M. Unreal’ stuff, I mean you could see him being groomed for the top spot. He was going to lose the title to Jey Uso at the King of the Ring pay-per-view, but obviously that’s not happening. So you see, I mean, they’re not bringing him in, they want to make him a monster, and that’s where he is right now.”

In addition to not appearing on “WWE Raw” or “WWE SmackDown,” Rusev competed in a few “WWE Main Event” matches in December but did not participate in any televised or dark matches for the promotion this year. That said, with the Royal Rumble coming up on Saturday, Rusev could be one of the surprise entrants in the match after Meltzer claimed he was about to return.
