All the information on interviews for the Bills’ new head coach

The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday for hitting the “proverbial playoff wall” for other reasons, owner Terry Pegula said. A scene in the locker room after the Bills lost to Denver gave Pegula a “where do we go from here” moment.

Buffalo moved quickly to replace head coach Sean McDermott, sifting through candidates extensively even before general manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula took questions from reporters Wednesday. After McDermott was fired, Beane was promoted to lead the coaching search.

Complete list of Bills head coach interviews

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady

Status: Interview completed (afternoon of January 21st)

Brady has been Buffalo’s head coach for more than two seasons, replacing Ken Dorsey in mid-2023. They had a top-10 offense with Brady calling the shots, but many Bills fans thought it was harder than it needed to be and wanted him gone. Instead, he will be offered the top job.

Status: Interview completed (morning of January 22)

Daboll is a native of western New York and a former offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. He serves as the head coach of the New York Giants from 2022 to mid-2025. He had a middling to terrible offense with the Giants, but in Buffalo he was one of the guys who unlocked quarterback Josh Allen when he entered the league.

He interviewed with the Bills on Thursday and could be a candidate for offensive coordinator if he doesn’t get the head coaching job. He was also asked to serve as offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. He also interviewed for the head coaching position with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Status: Interview completed (Afternoon of January 22)

Anarumo has been invited by most teams to serve as head coach and has been an NFL DC for eight years. After a disappointing 2024 season, he was fired by the Cincinnati Bengals and spent 2025 with the Colts.

Anarumo will meet with Bills officials in Buffalo on Thursday. He also interviewed for openings with the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel

Mike McDaniel was scheduled to interview with the Buffalo Bills but withdrew on Friday.

McDaniel comes from the Shanahan coaching tree and was considered an offensive guru when the Miami Dolphins hired him. Despite Tua Tagovailoa being in and out of the lineup, he helped the team reach the playoffs twice and finished in the top five on offense each of his first two seasons. After that, they ended their losing streak against the Dolphins and decided to restructure their organization.

He also dropped out of the race to be head coach of the Cleveland Browns, interviewed with the Baltimore Ravens but didn’t get the job, and is still in the running to be head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. If he doesn’t get the head coaching job, he’s expected to become the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.

He’s certainly respected as a player, but his only head coaching experience was at St. Michael Catholic High School…

Days after meeting with the Bills, he withdrew his name, but rumors circulated that they could name Rivers their quarterbacks coach when the dust settled.

Washington Commanders RB coach Anthony Lynn

Status: Interview scheduled (1/24)

Lynn was the former Bills offensive coordinator under Rex Ryan and the interim head coach after Ryan was fired. A former NFL running back, he has been an NFL coach since 2000, primarily as a position coach. Lynn served as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017 to 2020, compiling a 33-31 record in one playoff run.

Lynn also spoke with the Cleveland Browns over the weekend.

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver

Status: Interview completed (1/24)

Weaver became the Bills defensive line coach in 2013, but that predated Beane’s tenure in Buffalo. He spent one year as the Houston Texans defensive coordinator in 2020, 2024 and 2025 as the Dolphins defensive coordinator.

He is also running to become head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski

Status: Interview completed (1/25)

Udinski is a rising offensive star under Liam Cohen. He just turned 30 and has only been an NFL coordinator for one season. Prior to joining Cohen, he worked with the Minnesota Vikings where Kevin O’Connell served as assistant quarterbacks coach. His resume is just too weak.

Udinski had his second interview for the Cleveland Browns head coaching job on Friday.

Denver Broncos passing game coordinator Davis Webber

Status: Virtual interview completed (1/26)

Weber is another bright young man who has plenty of connections to the Bills. He spent a few years on the team’s practice squad, serving in that role alongside quarterback Josh Allen. He only appeared in one game. The Bills reportedly offered Ken Dorsey the quarterbacks coach job when he was promoted to offensive coordinator, but he decided to play another year and went to the New York Giants with Brian Daboll. He has been with the Denver Broncos since his days as quarterbacks coach and Bonix’s passing game coordinator.

The Bills can now talk to Webber as his season ends on Sunday. He will interview again this week for the Las Vegas Raiders job.

Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase

Status: Virtual interview completed (1/26)

With the Rams eliminated, their passing game coordinator will meet with Buffalo on Monday night. He will interview in person for the Cleveland Browns job Monday afternoon.

Scheelhaase is another very young candidate, at 35 years old, who has only been a passing game coordinator for one NFL season. He served as an offensive assistant with the Rams in 2024 and as an offensive assistant at Iowa State in 2023. Sean McVay’s coaching tree has indeed risen rapidly and has produced several top NFL head coaches.

Bills head coach search information

Here’s everything you need to know about the Bills’ head coaching search right now.

Bills can’t interview Super Bowl coaches until after game

Coaches of Super Bowl teams can complete in-person interviews up to a week before the big game. Unfortunately for Buffalo, this was only the second interview. The team will need to complete virtual interviews with these candidates beforehand. Buffalo missed out on this opportunity because they were in the divisional round.

If the Bills want to talk to the Seahawks’ Clint Kubiak, they’ll have to wait.
