African players in Europe: Unused sub Salah steals spotlight

Mohamed Salah did not feature in Liverpool’s 3-3 draw away to Leeds United at the weekend, but that did not stop the Egypt captain being the center of media attention.

He lashed out at Liverpool boss Arne Slott in a shocking rant, claiming he had been “thrown under the bus” during a troubled season that could spell the end of a legendary career at Anfield.

Defending champion Liverpool only achieved 7 wins and 6 losses after 15 rounds, ranking ninth. United will drop further down the pecking order if they avoid Monday’s defeat at bottom-placed Wolves.

Salah had been linked with a move to the Saudi Professional League in January, but he was left on the bench for a third consecutive game in the draw with Leeds United and did not even come on as a substitute.

The 33-year-old has been criticized for his defensive deficiencies this season, scoring just five goals in 19 games this term, continuing a sharp decline in form that began when Liverpool’s title victory was all but certain at the end of last season.

Salah will travel to Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations after next weekend’s home game against Brighton and has hinted it could be his last appearance in a Liverpool shirt if he is selected.

“I’m very, very disappointed. I’ve done a lot for this club over the years, especially last season,” Salah said. “Now I’m on the bench and I don’t know why. I think it’s obvious that someone wants me to take all the responsibility.”
