93-year-old California man arrested for allegedly shooting wife in their car

A 93-year-old man was arrested after he shot his wife in a car, police said.

After the incident in the Bay Area city of Fremont on January 3, Richard Hocking reported to the police and turned himself in. This was the city’s first homicide of 2026.

According to the Fremont Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene around 12:22 a.m. following reports of a shooting.

Police attended the scene and detained the nonagenarian, who was found in his own care. Police found the body of an 86-year-old woman in the car.

The woman, identified as Hawking’s wife, was pronounced dead at the scene and a gun was found in the car.

Investigators said Hocking was taken into custody and taken to the Fremont Police Department, where he gave police a statement detailing his motive for the crime.

Details of his motive have not been revealed. independent Fremont police have been contacted for more information.

Hawking was later detained on charges of gun-related homicide.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will review the case and related evidence.

Police said the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
