5-year-old and her uncle killed in airstrike in Gaza as Israel says it targeted an imminent threat

DEIR BALA, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli attack on a tent housing displaced people in Gaza on Monday killed a 5-year-old girl and her uncle and injured two other children, hospital officials said.

Officials at Al-Nasser Hospital said the strike took place in the Muwais area northwest of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The Associated Press could not independently verify those details. Family members cried over the body as it was taken to the hospital.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 400 people have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire began in October, including the deceased.

The Israeli military said on social media that it had attacked a Hamas militant who was planning an immediate attack on Israeli forces in the southern Gaza Strip. The statement said the attack was in compliance with the ceasefire and was targeted to mitigate civilian harm.

It was unclear whether the statement was referring to the deadly tent attack. The military also said it had begun attacking Hezbollah and Hamas terror targets in southern and eastern Lebanon due to continued ceasefire violations.

The attack came days after Lebanese army commanders planned to brief the government on their mission to disarm Hezbollah along the border with Israel.

Israel and Lebanese armed groups fought for more than a year and reached a ceasefire in November 2024. Israel continues to control small parts of Lebanon and continues to launch attacks, accusing the group of trying to rearm.

Earlier on Monday, Gaza’s health ministry reported that two more bodies had been taken to local hospitals in the past 24 hours. The ministry, which is part of the Hamas government, said 422 bodies had been brought to hospitals since the ceasefire came into effect on October 10. The ministry keeps detailed casualty records, which U.N. agencies and independent experts consider generally reliable.

According to reports, five more people were injured and taken to the hospital on the last day. They are among 1,189 wounded since the ceasefire. During the same period, another 684 people were found dead in rubble across Gaza.

The total number of Palestinian deaths in the war between Israel and Hamas has risen to at least 71,388, the ministry said. Another 171,269 people were injured.
