At approximately 2:40 pm local time on Friday, February 20, Hallandale Beach Police (HBP) were notified that a 1-year-old child was injured in a dog attack at a residence in the 400 block of Southeast Ninth Court in Hallandale Beach, Florida, and was “receiving treatment at a local hospital,” Hallandale Beach Police confirmed to PEOPLE.

“A domestic dog attacked the 1-year-old child while the mother was changing the child’s diaper,” an HBP spokesperson said. “The mother was successful in pulling the child away, but she was bitten during the struggle.”

Police confirmed to People magazine that the dog was a six-year-old American pit bull. Both mother and child suffered “serious injuries” in the attack.

HBP added, “Following the incident, a family member secured the animal and requested our assistance in removing it from the home. Broward County Animal Care and Control was contacted and they marked this as an emergency response.”

According to WPLG Local 10, the mother looked away for just a second while changing her son’s diaper when she heard the dog growl, approach and attack him.

The boy’s father told NBC 6 South Florida that the mother and son were taken to a local hospital by a “good Samaritan.” The child was airlifted to DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood.

In video obtained by WPLG Local 10, the child can be seen being taken away on a stretcher by medical staff after arriving at the hospital by helicopter. The mother was also seen chasing her son towards the hospital.

HBP confirmed to People that the child’s condition is stable.

The dog is currently in the custody of Broward County Animal Care and Control, NBC 6 South Florida reported. The dog was surrendered by the family after the incident.

The boy’s father claimed to the media that the American pit bull showed no signs of aggression before the attack.

HBP told PEOPLE, “We are still investigating (gathering facts and speaking with those involved). We will share more details as soon as the investigation allows.”
