Myrtle Beach is home to dozens of donut shops, but these pastry shops aren’t the only places to find “donut holes” in the city.
“There are still about 40 donut holes within the urban enclave,” Mayor Mark Kruea said at a Myrtle Beach City Council meeting. “These are areas of unincorporated Horry County that are completely surrounded by the city of Myrtle Beach.”
On Tuesday, the City Council voted on an ordinance to close two of those loopholes by annexing the properties to the city.
“It’s a good thing, especially for commercial properties, to plug those donut holes as much as possible,” Krua told the Sun-News.
The Myrtle Beach City Council voted to annex a roughly 0.9-acre parcel of land off Professional Boulevard.
The first parcel, bordered on three sides by Myrtle Beach, is approximately 0.9 acres located off Professional Drive near Robert M. Grissom Parkway. The annexation rezoned the land from Horry County Office Professional, Institutional (OPI) Land to Myrtle Beach Medical, Professional (MP) Land.
“We’re going to build an office building on it…the land is still with the county, so obviously we have to annex it to the city for water and sewer purposes and annex it to the city,” owner Warren Smith said.
The new building will house construction company Traditional Homebuilders and accounting firm Clemmons King and Brown.
The Myrtle Beach City Council voted to annex about an acre of land next to the Highway 17 Bypass and 21st Avenue North.
The second parcel is just over an acre and is part of Broadway at the Beach. Consolidating the parcel would rezone it from Horry County Recreational Commercial (AC) Land to Myrtle Beach Recreational (E) Land, making it available for dozens of different residential, commercial and public service uses.
Burroughs and Chapin Construction Senior Vice President Seth McCoy represented the applicant on Broadway at Beach Palace Tract LLC, but the Sun-News was unable to obtain comment. The city also was unaware of plans for the newly annexed parcels.
“The owner may use it in the future and ask for it to be annexed to the city,” Krua said.
