The Yankees are gradually facing some roster issues as Opening Day gets closer, with the latest moves involving Angel Chivelli and Carlos LaGrange. The former was drafted to Triple-A, while the latter was sent to minor league training camp.
The Yankees have focused on finding hidden gems to build their bullpen in recent seasons and acquired Angel Chivilli from the Rockies in a trade this offseason. The young right-hander is coming off a terrible 2025 season, taking enough hits in spring training to start the year in the minors. On the bright side, he struck out 10 batters in 6.2 innings, so it’s worth keeping an eye on. Chivili was always going to be a relief project, so he would have time to hone his craft in 3A competition rather than potentially costing the game in the process.

Despite impressing in the spring, LaGrange never pitched above Double-A, and it was always possible that he would need more work in the minors. The 22-year-old has allowed just one run in 9.2 innings in three appearances, including one start. LaGrange’s last outing was an incredibly thrilling outing in which he held the Red Sox scoreless through four innings, hitting heater speeds of over 99 mph and generating 11 whiffs in 29 swings. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before he would exist and make an impact on a major league team.
