Of course, there are no guarantees. The New York Yankees signed Randall Grichuk as a free agent on Wednesday night, but that doesn’t mean he has a roster spot.

But he certainly fits the profile of what the Yankees are looking for. If he proves that this spring, it could be bad news for Jason Dominguez.

The Yankees lack right-handed hitting outfielders. Now they have one, a veteran with 212 home runs in his major league career.

Domingos is already being considered for a backup role at best. Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge will start in the outfield, with Giancarlo Stanton at DH. Dominguez had nowhere to go.

There is already speculation that he might start the season in Triple-A. Dominguez is a switch-hitter, but he’s poor with left-handed pitching, so that aspect of his game doesn’t address the Yankees’ potential platoon issues the way Grichuk does.

The trickiest part of all this for Dominguez is the lack of playing time if the Yankees stay healthy.

This isn’t an attempt to delay the release or give him a chance against Triple-A pitchers.

The way this team is constructed doesn’t really provide space for Dominguez. Even more so if Grichuk becomes a member of the club.

Maybe this will eventually make Dominguez a trade candidate. For now, that just means the former top prospect has a steeper hill to climb in terms of relevance this season.
