The New York Yankees have been plagued by injuries to start the 2026 season, but they can’t make any excuses for their performance on both sides of the ball. The Yankees were still a good enough team to win games at a high level, and the performance wasn’t all that bad in the end.

New York currently has a record of 10 wins and 9 losses, only 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AFC East.

Young shortstop Anthony Volpe is one of the injuries the Yankees have been dealing with. Some fans may not expect Volpe to be on the roster or start at shortstop, but the reality is the young man is the Yankees’ starting shortstop and fans will need to get used to that now.

In Volpe’s defense, it wasn’t quite like the guys behind him who had the chance to show a lot and did a lot. Volpe should be a shortstop now and in the future. The only question remaining is when he will return, with latest reports suggesting it could be at the end of this month.

Pete Caldera of NJ.com wrote: “Based on that timeline, Volpe could return to the Yankees lineup in the last week of April or the first week of May, but he’s not focusing on a specific date.”

What’s important here is that Volpe appears to be recovering well. He was actually having a decent year before suffering a shoulder injury last season. I think if all goes well, we could see a nice rebound from the former New Jersey high school star.
