Wrexham’s Moore to miss Wales’ World Cup play-offs

Wrexham striker Kiefer Moore is ruled out of Wales’ World Cup play-offs with a hamstring injury.

The 33-year-old has been a major doubt since tearing his tendon in the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea earlier this month.

Moore is not expected to return to action until April after missing subsequent Championship games against Hull City and Swansea City.

It means he will not be available for Wales’ World Cup play-off semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 26 and, if they win that game, the play-off final against Italy or Northern Ireland five days later.

“Kiefer’s unfitness for international duty is a blow for him and for Wales,” Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said.

“He had injured his tendon and he was feeling fine but it showed up on the scan and it’s one of those injuries where 80-85 per cent of the time you’re fine but if it goes beyond that you’re susceptible to muscle injuries.”

Wrexham wing-back Liberato Cacace is also missing for the club, the latest setback for the New Zealander in an injury-plagued first season since joining from Italian side Empoli last summer.

“Libby will miss the New Zealand internationals and we have to focus on getting him to contribute towards the end of the season,” Parkinson said.

“Because he’s had some setbacks, I really don’t want to put any pressure or timescale on him.

“But it wasn’t a major injury, it was just some minor setbacks that he kept getting that were obviously not his performance. We were just trying to do whatever we could to get him to contribute.”
