Woman who collapsed at Boston nightclub has died, city suspends club

A woman who collapsed on the dance floor of a Boston nightclub has died, her family confirmed, and now the city has revoked the nightclub’s entertainment license and an investigation is underway.

Anastacia Morales was out with her sister and friends at Icon nightclub in Boston on Saturday night.

Boston 25 spoke with Anastasia’s sister, Angelica Morales, on Monday. She said they were dancing to celebrate Angelica’s birthday when suddenly Anastasia collapsed. Her family said she died Tuesday.

“I begged them, even the security guards, and I screamed at the top of my lungs, pick my sister up and take her outside to where there is oxygen, there is no oxygen here, everyone is on oxygen, the oxygen levels are very low,” Morales said Monday.

“My sister fell, so I grabbed her so her head wouldn’t hit the floor, and then I started panicking,” Morales said.

According to Morales, her sister and her friend tried to get the DJ to stop playing music. Morales said he did this for several minutes before turning the music back on.

“Some people care, some people don’t care, and when the music comes back to everybody, it’s like the devil, everybody doesn’t care, and I’m screaming and trying to overpower the music, but I can’t,” Morales said.

Boston police said crews responded immediately and called emergency services, while an off-duty paramedic provided first aid.

Police said the crowd failed to give them enough space to work, causing them to close the club and Anastasia was taken to hospital.

“The whole thing was negligence; they didn’t care about my sister at all, they were just playing with my sister,” Morales said.

Her family said she died Tuesday, possibly of cardiac arrest.

Her sister also said Anastasia had an underlying heart condition.

She now leaves behind two children, including a six-month-old baby.

Her family are now questioning whether the club could have done more to save her.

In a statement released by the Entertainment Division of the Mayor’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing, they said they will hold a hearing in the coming weeks on the future of the ICON Liquor License. “Following an incident early Sunday morning, the Entertainment Division of the Mayor’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing has suspended the entertainment license of ICON Nightclub, effective immediately. The Boston Licensing Commission will hold a hearing in the coming weeks to discuss the future of the ICON Liquor License.”
